Join us for our 10th Annual TeamWalk Motorcycle Ride on Saturday, September 21 at the Chelmsford Elks. This year’s ride in in memory of Officer Tim Bourke.
On Labor Day 2009 Colleen Carragher met Tim Bourke, a patrolman for Chelmsford Police Department, at a party where they talked until 3:00 a.m. It was the beginning of a 14-year relationship.
In mid-April of 2023 Tim wasn’t feeling well. He went to a local urgent care, but things began to get worse. His sleep schedule changed, he lost weight, and a week later he woke up looking jaundice. At that point he drove to the emergency room at Lowell General Hospital. It was at LGH that Dr. Ardman confirmed Tim had colon cancer which had spread to his liver.
“The next day was our wedding anniversary, and we joked about not having planned to spend it in the hospital,” said Colleen. “Tim’s nurse heard us talking and went to gift shop. She made a little bag filled with chocolates, lotions, and a rock with the word ‘Hope’ on it. She also bought a card for Tim to sign. I’ll never forget how thoughtful she was.”
Tim was determined to fight, but after two doses of chemo followed by four days of radiation with no improvement the decision was made to stop treatment.
On Sunday May 7, 2023, 13 days after he went into the hospital, Tim passed away peacefully. He was 51. “He did not have the chance to go to the cancer center, but I want people to know that we have a world class cancer center in Lowell so there is no need to go to Boston for treatment,” added Colleen.
“The Chelmsford Police Department has been an incredible source of support so when I got a call from them asking if the 10th anniversary of TeamWalk’s Ride for CancerCare could be named in Tim’s memory, I instantly said yes,” said Colleen. “I will do whatever I can to keep Tim’s memory alive and support people in the community with cancer. I look forward to seeing everyone on September 21st and hope that together we can raise a lot of money for this important cause.”

We are deeply saddened by the passing of a close member of our TeamWalk family. Meg Lemire-Berthel was a founding member of the TeamWalk Advisory Committee and served as the Director of Social Work in the Lowell General Hospital Cancer Center for over 25 years. In that role, Meg touched the lives of many with her compassion and dedication.
Using the funds raised through TeamWalk, she and her team made sure that the person, not just the patient, was cared for throughout their journey with cancer - from ensuring patients had transportation to treatment, to providing holiday meals for those in need, and connecting patients and families to important support services - Meg has left behind a legacy of kindness that will be remembered and cherished.
Her contributions went beyond the four walls of the hospital and are embedded deep within our community through the oncology support groups she formed, the creative cancer awareness campaigns she inspired and the deep, personal connections she made with hundreds of local cancer patients and their families.
Meg’s face was always among the first walkers would see at the TeamWalk finish line, offering high fives, hugs, and words of support. Her kindness, sense of humor and work ethic have left an indelible mark on Lowell General Hospital and she will be so dearly missed.
